Trump: The organizer of the terrorist attack at the Kabul airport was arrested

On March 4, US President Donald Trump announced in a speech to Congress that the mastermind of the 2021 Kabul airport attack had been captured. According to CNN, the arrest was made in Pakistan, and the operation was conducted using information from the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

The mastermind and his crimes

After his arrest, Muhammad Sharifullah was questioned by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). It is understood that:

• He was recruited by ISIS-K in 2016.
  
• He was involved in planning several deadly attacks.
  
• He played a key role in organizing the Kabul airport bombing.
  
• He was also involved in the attack on the embassy guards in Kabul and the attack on a nightclub in Moscow.
  

Sharifullah had been in prison since 2019. He was released in 2021 and two weeks later carried out a terrorist attack at Kabul airport.

2021 Kabul airport attack

This terrorist attack took place on August 26, 2021. When an ISIS militant blew himself up:

• 13 American soldiers were killed.
  
• At least 170 Afghan civilians were killed.
  
• Hundreds of people were injured.
  

The attack occurred as US and NATO forces were in the process of urgently evacuating Afghanistan. Many Afghans had gathered around the eastern gate of the airport to board evacuation flights.

According to CNN sources, Sharifullah will be extradited to the United States and charged with “conspiracy to provide material support to terrorism.”
