On March 6, two KF-16 fighter jets of the South Korean Air Force accidentally dropped MK-82 bombs on a residential area in the city of Pocheon during training exercises. This was reported by the Yonhap News Agency, citing military sources.
How did the incident happen?
South Korean and US military personnel were conducting joint exercises at a training ground in the city of Pocheon, located 25 km from the border with the DPRK. At 10:04 (06:04 Tashkent time), the military aircraft dropped eight bombs outside the training ground, near residential areas. The military described the incident as an "unnatural event."
Injured and damaged facilities
Eight people were injured and hospitalized, two of whom are in critical condition. Most of the injured are receiving medical care for broken bones.
A church, six residential buildings, a truck and several other facilities were also damaged.
Military response
The South Korean Air Force has launched an investigation into the incident. The military apologized to the victims and wished them a speedy recovery.
The incident occurred during joint exercises between South Korea and the United States against the threat from North Korea. Usually, such exercises involve practicing hitting specific targets, but this time, a random mistake caused damage to populated areas.
The South Korean government announced that it would take additional safety measures to eliminate the consequences of the incident and prevent a recurrence.
So far, officials have not provided specific information about the reasons for which the aerial bombs fell outside the range and whether this was due to a technical or human factor.
The incident shows that there are serious problems with safety measures during the South Korean air force exercises. The injured are currently receiving medical care, and the investigation is ongoing.
South Korea and the US military exercises plan to strengthen safety standards to prevent such errors and dangerous situations from recurring in the future.
