The Ukrainian and US delegations agreed on a 30-day ceasefire as a result of negotiations in Saudi Arabia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his speech on the evening of March 11, commented on the agreement between Kiev and Washington, noting that now the US must convince Russia of this proposal.
Ukrainian proposals and US response
According to Zelensky, the Ukrainian side put forward three main proposals during the talks in Jeddah:
- "Silence in the sky" - a cessation of air strikes;
- "Silence at sea" - ensuring security in maritime areas;
- "Release of prisoners" - exchange of prisoners of war.
In response to these proposals, the United States proposed a complete ceasefire in the sea, air and along the entire front line for 30 days. Ukraine accepted this proposal and positively assessed it. Zelensky said: "We agree, if the Russians also agree, then silence will reign."
The United States has resumed assistance to Ukraine
As a result of the negotiations, the United States decided to resume the provision of military assistance to Ukraine. Washington will also lift the temporary suspension of intelligence sharing with Kiev.
Head of the Ukrainian Presidential Administration Andriy Yermak said that Kiev is ready to accept the US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire. If this ceasefire is also accepted by Russia, the agreement can be extended.
Negotiations with Russia and additional issues
During the negotiations, the parties also discussed the exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine and the forced return of Ukrainian children. The United States has pledged to discuss these proposals with Russia.
Cooperation on mineral resources
During the talks in Jeddah, the Ukrainian and US sides agreed to accelerate the agreement on the joint development of Ukrainian mineral resources.
According to the Financial Times, the talks are planned not to last a second day and to take rapid steps to implement the agreements.
The talks between Ukraine and the United States led to the declaration of a 30-day ceasefire and the resumption of military assistance to Kiev. Now Washington is working to persuade Russia to agree to this agreement. This process could begin a new stage in international relations.
