Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Shar'a has signed the country's interim constitution for a five-year term. This step marks an important stage for political change and a new government in Syria. The new constitution takes a sharp stance against the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad. According to it, Assad's rise to power and rule are recognized as a crime. This was reported by Central Asia.
Overthrow and new government
In early December 2024, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) rebel group overthrew President Bashar al-Assad, who had been in power in Syria for more than 50 years. This event was a major turning point that radically changed the political situation in the country. On January 29, 2025, Ahmed al-Shar'a assumed power and commissioned the development of a new draft constitution.
Main principles of the constitution
One of the important innovations is that the new constitution retains the provisions on the necessity of a Muslim as the head of state and the supremacy of Islamic law. This determines the main principle of the updated legal system in the country. It should also be noted that provisions strengthening freedom of speech and the media have been introduced.
The constitution pays great attention to maintaining a balance between the legislative, executive and judicial branches of government. This, in turn, ensures the stability of the legal system and the orderly functioning of state bodies. At the same time, the document emphasizes that citizens are provided with equal rights and obligations before the law, regardless of race, religion, gender or ethnicity.
Special articles on the army and weapons
Also, the new constitution pays special attention to the army. It stipulates that the army is a professional national institution and that its activities must comply with the law. In addition, special articles are included on the prohibition of weapons not under control in the army. This provides for the full state control of the country's security system.
Syria's new path
The new interim constitution constitutes the main plan for political and legal changes in Syria. It is aimed, on the one hand, at continuing the fight against the old regime, and on the other, at ensuring freedom and justice in the country. This, of course, should serve the future development of the Syrian people. The principles enshrined in the interim constitution were developed in order to base the country's legal foundations on new stability and democratic principles.
At the same time, the practical impact of the new constitution on the restoration of the internal political and economic situation in Syria will be important. How the international community will respond to these changes and what steps will be taken to ensure peace and stability in the country - these questions will be answered in due course.
