How did Erdogan react to Imomoglu's arrest?
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has commented for the first time on the situation surrounding the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. He noted that the opposition is trying to exert political pressure on the police and judiciary.

Imamoglu's arrest and Erdogan's reaction

On March 20, the Istanbul prosecutor's office announced that opposition leader Imamoglu had been arrested in connection with a corruption and bribery case.

The politician himself described this as pressure from the authorities and said that he would not give in. Security measures have been tightened in Istanbul, and social media has been disrupted.

President Erdogan described Imamoglu's arrest as a legitimate process and accused the opposition of trying to influence the government.

"The opposition is trying to cover up its mistakes with bigger mistakes. They are losing their balance, attacking the police, and threatening judges," Erdogan said.

Economic impact: lira depreciates, stock market falls

Imamoglu's arrest has had not only political but also economic consequences.
  • The Turkish lira fell 10% against the US dollar, rising above 41 liras for the first time.
  • The main index of the Istanbul BIST 100 stock exchange fell by 6.87%.

This indicates further instability in the Turkish economy and political tensions.

Tensions between the government and the opposition

Erdogan, while criticizing the opposition, stressed that the government is focused on solving the country's problems, not on arguing with the opposition.

"We cannot spend time arguing with the opposition. We will work towards achieving our goals," the Turkish president said.

Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc, however, called for the suspension of demonstrations over Imamoglu's arrest, stating that today's proceedings had nothing to do with Erdogan.

The arrest of Ekrem Imamoglu has further increased the tension in the Turkish political scene. This incident has not only deepened the conflict between the government and the opposition, but also caused economic instability.
