Syrian security forces have arrested former Grand Mufti Sheikh Ahmed Badriddin Hassoun at Damascus International Airport. The cleric was trying to flee the country, Al-Mayadeen reported.
It is reported that Sheikh Hassoun was traveling to Oman, where he was scheduled to undergo emergency surgery. He had previously informed authorities that he wanted to go to Jordan for treatment. However, he was arrested a few minutes after arriving at the airport's VIP lounge.
Raids are being conducted in Damascus to capture supporters of former President Bashar al-Assad who are hiding. Several people were detained during the special operation. Weapons, ammunition and explosive devices were found in them.
Clashes between Assad supporters and Syrian forces
In March, armed clashes broke out between Assad's Alawites and the new Syrian government in the provinces of Latakia, Tartus, Hama and Homs. The total number of victims exceeded 1.3 thousand people, of whom more than a thousand were civilians. The raids by security forces ended on March 10. Syrian Defense Ministry spokesman Hassan Abdul Ghani said that government security forces had managed to "neutralize the remnants of the ousted Bashar al-Assad regime from outside" and stabilize the situation.
The new Syrian government then appealed to the Russian government to extradite Assad. According to Al Arabiya and Al Hadath, President Ahmed al-Sharaa is demanding that Assad be handed over for trial. At the same time, Russia is refusing to meet the demand for the time being, as it considers it "not an insurmountable obstacle to the restoration of relations between the two countries."
On March 24, 15 pro-Assad fighters were captured in the mountainous areas on the border of the Latakia and Idlib provinces.
