Myanmar earthquake death toll rises to 144 (photo, video)
On March 28, two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 6.4 struck Myanmar and neighboring Thailand. The quake was felt in major cities, including Bangkok, where a state of emergency was declared and airports were closed. A 30-story skyscraper under construction in the Thai capital collapsed, trapping 43 people under the rubble.

The consequences of the earthquake in Myanmar were even more devastating. A bridge over the Irrawaddy River between Mandalay and Sikain collapsed, damaging historic buildings, including the Chauktoji Pagoda and the walls of the 19th-century Mandalay Palace.

Locals said many homes were completely destroyed, and people were afraid to return to their buildings for fear of aftershocks.

According to the latest data, 144 people have died in the earthquake in Myanmar, and the death toll may rise. This was announced by the country's Chairman of the State Administrative Council, Prime Minister and Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

“A total of 144 people have died. 432 people have been injured in Naypyidaw Municipal District. As far as we know, 300 people are still missing in Sagaing and Kyaukse. A total of 732 people have been injured. The number of deaths and injuries is expected to increase. We are still conducting rescue operations in these buildings, as buildings have collapsed in some places,” the head of state said in an official address to the nation.

Seismologists are warning of possible aftershocks in the coming hours after the strong earthquake and are advising people to avoid high-rise buildings.
