Russian troops are preparing for a new offensive in the coming weeks to increase pressure on Kiev and strengthen their negotiating position, Ukrainian military and analysts report. According to the Associated Press (AP), Russia is planning a multi-vector offensive along the entire front line.
Signs of preparation for an attack
According to Ukrainian intelligence, Russian troops are directing the main offensive to the eastern regions of the country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted at a summit in Paris on March 27 that Russia is preparing for a spring offensive in the Sumy, Kharkiv and Zaporizhia regions. The next day, Zelensky announced that the Ukrainian armed forces were taking measures to counter the offensive in the Sumy region. According to him, Russia’s goal with this attack is to buy time in negotiations and seize new territories.
How long can the Russian offensive last?
According to analyst Alexei Getman, the Russian offensive could last from 6 to 9 months, that is, almost the entire year of 2025. The Ukrainian military notes that Russian troops are increasing the number of attacks to improve their positions and are actively conducting reconnaissance to destroy Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
There are also concerns that Russia is planning to throw its troops from the Kursk region, from which Ukrainian forces have withdrawn, onto other fronts. According to one of the Ukrainian commanders in Donetsk, the Russian troops coming from this region may be mentally and physically stronger due to their previous victories.
Negotiations stall
Associated Press reports, Russia has rejected a US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine. An agreement on a ceasefire in the Black Sea has also been stalled due to disagreements in the negotiations. The Kremlin is making this conditional on the lifting of sanctions against agricultural exporters and the re-connection of Rosselkhozbank to the SWIFT system.
Amid the growing military tension between Ukraine and Russia, the Ukrainian military continues to prepare for a new offensive. Analysts say the Kremlin's goal is to seize Ukrainian territory and gain an advantage in negotiations. It remains unclear what form the attack will take and what its consequences will be.
