Trump confirms Britain's decision to transfer the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius
US President Donald Trump has approved the British government's decision to return the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius, The Telegraph reports.

"We are currently working with the Mauritian government to finalize the agreement and sign the agreement. As I understand it, at this stage, after discussing this issue with the United States, it concerns only us and the Mauritian government," said a source in the office of the Prime Minister of Great Britain, Keir Starmer.

Mauritius was a British colony since 1814 and gained independence in 1968. The Chagos Archipelago was separated from Mauritius in 1965, when the country was a British colony. Britain bought it for 3 million pounds and declared it its territory in the Indian Ocean. The largest island in the archipelago, Diego Garcia, was leased to the United States, where a British-American air base was established.

On October 3, 2024, an agreement was reached under which Great Britain would transfer Chagos to Mauritius. At the same time, the air base on Diego Garcia would be retained. London and Port Louis signed an agreement, according to which the air base would be leased for 99 years. The United States supported this decision.
