South Korean President Yun Suk-yeol has been officially removed from office, four months after a failed attempt to declare martial law, BBC reported. The Constitutional Court upheld the impeachment ruling.
All eight judges supported the impeachment, stating that the president’s actions violated the constitution, rule of law, and democratic principles.
As a result, a new presidential election must be held within 60 days.
In December 2024, Yun attempted to impose martial law. The parliament accused him of attempting a coup and impeached him. Although he was suspended, full removal from office required a Constitutional Court decision.
Yun denied the charges, calling the decision “politically motivated” and saying it aimed to protect the state from the opposition. His lawyers described the court proceedings as “unlawful and unfair.”
In March, the Constitutional Court released Yun from custody and canceled the arrest warrant against him. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
