Are more powerful earthquakes expected in Asia? A serious warning from Chinese scientists
The region is again at risk after a devastating earthquake in Myanmar in March

Chinese seismologists have warned that more powerful earthquakes may occur in the Asian region, especially in China and its surrounding areas, in the coming years. This was reported by the South China Morning Post.

A team of experts led by Zhu Hongbinya, a senior engineer at the Beijing Earthquake Administration, analyzed seismic data recorded since 1879 and found that there are six major active periods in the region. Based on this data, scientists say that the next period of seismic activity is approaching.

Earthquake in Myanmar — a dire warning

Recall that at the end of March 2025, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck Myanmar. Tremors were also felt in Thailand, China and Vietnam. As a result, about 3.5 thousand people died, and more than 4.6 thousand were injured.

At the same time, international organizations are calling for additional assistance to eliminate the consequences of this disaster. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), at least $ 8 million is needed in Myanmar to restore medical services, prevent the spread of diseases and provide vital assistance.

What do scientists say?

According to Chinese researchers, the recent earthquakes are a sign of the beginning of a new era of seismic activity. They note that a high risk remains not only in China, but also in the entire Southeast Asia region.

Scientists are urging citizens to take earthquake risk seriously. This requires not only strengthening building standards, but also increasing safety awareness among the population.
