According to Bloomberg on April 18, the administration of US President Donald Trump is ready to recognize Russian “control” over Crimea as part of a broader peace agreement on Ukraine.
However, the agency noted that no official decision has yet been made on this issue. Neither the White House nor the State Department have commented.
Crimea is the most sensitive point in the negotiations
On April 14, special representative of the Trump administration Stephen Witkoff told Fox News:
“Putin wants peace. But the biggest problem in this conflict is Russia’s control over Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson.”
Zelensky Rejects: “Nobody Can Make Decisions Except the Ukrainian People”
The next day, at a press conference in Odessa, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to these comments:
“All territories belong to the unitary state of Ukraine. Therefore, only the Ukrainian people can speak about the territory of our state.”
Is a new stage in international relations beginning?
The possibility of such a document in the context of US-Russian relations, the Ukrainian conflict, and the geopolitical status of Crimea could cause major debates on the international stage. If Washington were to recognize Crimea as under Russian control, it would:
- be a blow to Ukrainian sovereignty,
- create a confrontation within the NATO alliance,
- set a precedent for other conflict regions.
