U.S. President Donald Trump once told his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky that he had no trump cards in his hand, but now he has handed him the strongest poker combination. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made this remark on Fox Business, commenting on the signed agreement on natural resources.
"If you recall, President Trump once said in the Oval Office to Zelensky, 'You have no trump cards.' Well, guess what? President Trump has now handed him a royal flush. Because now we can take these cards and demonstrate to Russia's leadership that there is no gap between the objectives of the Ukrainian and American peoples," said Bessent.
A royal flush is the highest combination in poker, consisting of five cards of the same suit: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and 10.
In late February, during a heated exchange in the Oval Office, Trump told Zelensky he had "no trump cards." "With us, you'll have trump cards," Trump said at that time. Zelensky responded, "I'm not playing cards. No trumps...no trumps at all, Mr. President. I'm absolutely serious."
On his Telegram channel, Zelensky described the agreement as "the first significant outcome of the meeting at the Vatican ahead of the Pope’s funeral," calling the conversation historic. "We are eagerly awaiting other outcomes of this dialogue," the Ukrainian president added.
The politician emphasized that the agreement significantly evolved during its preparation and now represents "genuine, equal partnership," without implying any indebtedness to the United States. Trump previously stated that Kyiv owed $350 billion to the U.S. for aid already received and claimed this deal would help repay these funds.
At the same time, the Ukrainian government also made some concessions: initially, they insisted strongly on obtaining security guarantees. The U.S. opposed this provision, and as a result, it was excluded from the document. Trump believes the U.S. involvement in extracting natural resources in Ukraine "would deter many negative forces from attacking the country or at least the areas where mining operations are conducted."
