Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has announced plans to dramatically increase the amount of financial assistance for migrants returning to their countries.
According to the head of government, the amount of financial assistance for migrants returning could increase from the current 900 euros to 32,000 euros.
“It is very important for us to strengthen control over the migration process,” Kristersson stressed.
According to him, a number of problems can be solved by increasing the financial incentive to leave the country. The publication notes that currently the financial assistance for adults is only 900 euros.
According to Kristersson, the current financial assistance system has not yielded the expected results. In particular, only one out of 70 applications submitted during 2023 was satisfied. For this reason, the Swedish government aims to increase this assistance by 3,400 percent from January 1, 2026.
“We are basically adopting the Danish experience. We are significantly increasing the amount of assistance for migrants who want to return to their homeland, but also feel that they do not have the opportunity to fully live in Sweden," the Swedish Prime Minister explained.
However, according to Kristersson, this method may not be suitable for all the country's population.
"It is possible that the effectiveness of this method will not be high for everyone, but we have many problems with integration. If there are migrants who have a legal basis to stay in our country, but have not been able to adapt to the Swedish way of life, they should seriously consider returning to their homeland," Kristersson added.
