The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has summoned diplomatic representatives of foreign states who participated in the military parade in Moscow on May 9 to mark the 80th anniversary of the Victory in World War II and officially announced a demarche to them.
Explaining the reasons for this diplomatic move, First Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Serhiy Kyslytsia stressed that the participation of high-ranking diplomatic and political figures of foreign states in the parade in Moscow in the context of the large-scale war waged by Russia since February 2022 is perceived by Kiev as an “unfriendly act.”
According to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, the participation of foreign officials in this event on Red Square “has no connection with the perpetuation of the memory of the victims and heroes of World War II” and this act is considered an indirect support for a position directed against the national security and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
According to Ukrainian diplomatic sources, more than 20 foreign heads of state, high-ranking diplomatic representatives and heads of foreign diplomatic missions attended the Victory Day parade in Moscow. The diplomats who participated in this event have now been presented with a statement of protest at the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
For your information: in diplomatic practice, a demarche is a diplomatic action or official statement used by a certain state to express its position, express its reaction to events in international relations, or formalize a protest.
It is noted that this diplomatic step taken by Ukraine may once again draw the attention of the international community to the ongoing conflict between Kiev and Moscow and further escalate the situation.
