Hopes for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing armed conflict between Ukraine and Russia have been revived. According to US President's special envoy Keith Kellogg, a 30-day comprehensive and unconditional ceasefire agreement could be the beginning of a process of ending hostilities between the two countries.
The US special envoy wrote on his social media page:
"As the US President has repeatedly said, stop these killings - now! A 30-day comprehensive and comprehensive ceasefire is of great importance in this regard."
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybyga also expressed Kiev's readiness to implement such a peace initiative. He noted that the Ukrainian side agrees to a 30-day complete, unconditional and unconditional ceasefire on land, sea and in the air starting from May 12.
“If the Russian Federation also agrees to this and effective monitoring by the international community is guaranteed, this could strengthen trust and pave the way for long-term peace talks,” the Ukrainian diplomat wrote on his Telegram channel.
The Russian side, however, is putting forward its own condition for this proposal. According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, if an agreement on a ceasefire is reached, the United States and European countries should completely stop supplying weapons to Ukraine.
“If this is not done, the ceasefire will only be beneficial for the Ukrainian side. Ukraine can use this situation to increase its total mobilization, deploy new troops to the front line, and rest the current military. Why should we give Ukraine an additional advantage in such a situation?” Peskov said in an interview with journalists.
Thus, an important step towards the realization of peace between Ukraine and Russia can be taken. However, for this, it is necessary for the parties to reach an agreement in their own circumstances and for effective supervision by international monitoring organizations.
For now, the international community is expected to actively participate in the implementation of this compromise. As a result, an important opportunity for long-term peace and diplomatic negotiations could be created.
