Relations between the US and Qatar are rising to a new level. As part of his tour of the Gulf states, US President Donald Trump visited Qatar, where a number of important agreements were reached between the two countries.
Yesterday, Donald Trump delivered a speech at the large US military base located in Qatar — Al-Udeid Air Base — and announced that agreements had been signed that will take military and economic cooperation between the countries to a new stage.
According to the president, Qatar will purchase the most advanced weapons and military equipment from the US for a total value of 42 billion dollars. The list includes THAAD missile defense systems, Pegasus refueling aircraft, Desert Vipers light armored vehicles, amphibious combat vehicles, and high-tech drones like the MQ-9B and Sky Guardian.
Trump emphasized that this contract is a huge success for the US defense industry and noted that cooperation with Qatar would further strengthen in the near future.
At the same time, an agreement was reached on further expanding and modernizing military infrastructure. Trump announced that the US will allocate 10 billion dollars over the coming years to expand the Al-Udeid base in Qatar.
“Qatar also supported this project and expressed its readiness to invest another 10 billion dollars in the modernization and expansion of the base in the coming years. This will make a significant contribution to strengthening regional security,” the US president said in his speech.
This marks Donald Trump's first official visit to Qatar. He also became the first US president to visit the Qatari emirate in the past twenty years. His negotiations with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani also elevated economic cooperation to a new level.
In particular, Qatar’s national airline signed an important agreement with American aircraft manufacturer Boeing to purchase new aircraft.
It was also previously reported that during the visit, the heads of state signed an economic cooperation agreement worth 1.2 trillion dollars. This historic deal is expected to further solidify the economic and strategic partnership between the two nations.
Washington and Doha also reached several agreements in the fields of defense and security. These agreements outline plans for consistently strengthening cooperation between the countries.
