In the Italian capital, Rome, an important meeting took place between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. The conversation was held behind closed doors at the residence of the U.S. Embassy in Italy. Also participating were U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office Andriy Yermak.
In focus – negotiations with Russia and sanctions issues
According to AFP agency, Zelensky and Vance discussed the planned telephone conversation between the presidents of Russia and the U.S., scheduled for May 19. The possibility of introducing new sanctions against Russia, if a ceasefire agreement is not reached, was also discussed.
According to information provided, the Ukrainian side emphasized their intent to end the war. Additionally, the situation on the frontline and security issues received particular attention during the discussions.
Negotiations on a historical backdrop
The dialogue took place just before the official inauguration ceremony of the new Pope Leo XIV in the Vatican. Delegations from more than 150 countries and religious organizations around the world attended this event, including the President of Ukraine, U.S. Vice President, the Prime Minister of Italy, the head of the European Commission, as well as the kings of Spain and Belgium.
Positive atmosphere compared to February disagreement
According to AFP sources, this meeting had a far more positive atmosphere compared to the dispute between Zelensky, Trump, and Vance, which occurred on February 28 in the United States. Recall, at that time, the negotiations in the Oval Office unexpectedly ended in disagreement, Zelensky left the meeting prematurely, and important agreements were not signed.
