
US President Donald Trump has given Russian President Vladimir Putin two weeks to act. If Putin does not act within that time, Trump will take other measures, the BBC reported.
Trump responded to a question at a White House press conference on May 28 about whether Putin is willing to end the war:
“I can’t answer that now, but I will in about two weeks. We will know in that time whether Putin has been deceiving us or not,” he said.
Trump has recently written on social media that the Russian president is “absolutely crazy” and “playing with fire.”
The Russian bombing campaign is now in its fourth year. At least 13 people have been killed and dozens more injured in the latest Russian strikes on Kiev, including children.
Trump’s comments reflect his growing frustration. Because the White House has tried several times to negotiate a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, but these attempts have not been successful.
Since Trump took office, Washington has increased pressure on Ukraine. This included an eight-day suspension of US military aid and intelligence sharing in March.
On May 28, Germany’s new Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that he would help Ukraine develop long-range missiles. The Kremlin has warned that unrestricted arms transfers to Ukraine would damage political agreements.
Despite Russian opposition, Trump has softened his stance on peace demands — he initially demanded an immediate 30-day ceasefire (to which only Ukraine agreed). Now he is offering Putin a face-to-face summit, saying that a compromise could be reached. In the context of diplomatic efforts, Trump has expressed his readiness to meet with Vladimir Zelensky and Vladimir Putin.
“I would like this meeting to take place a month or two earlier. We are working with Putin now and we will see what happens,” he added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of deliberately dragging out the peace process and said that Russia had not yet submitted the peace memorandum promised after the talks in Istanbul. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the document was “in the final stages.” Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
