The Russian government has decided to send Vladimir Putin's aide and former Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky to the next round of talks with Ukraine, despite the strong request of US President Donald Trump. This was announced by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova on the Rossiya 24 TV channel on May 29.
According to her, the composition of the Russian delegation at the Russian-Ukrainian talks to be held in Istanbul, Turkey on June 2 of this year will remain the same, and Vladimir Medinsky will again lead it.
It should be recalled that Medinsky has previously led negotiations between Moscow and Kiev several times. In particular, in 2022 and in May of this year, he participated as the head of the Russian delegation. However, his involvement in these negotiations is causing sharp protests from Western countries, especially the United States.
The American government, including the administration of President Trump, has been demanding the exclusion of Vladimir Medinsky from the negotiations. US diplomats and mediators believe that the participation of such a "hardliner" could have a negative impact on the peace process. They were particularly concerned that Medinsky had previously written propaganda history textbooks that justified Russia's military actions in Ukraine.
It should be noted that Medinsky is also known for his sharp and controversial statements. He previously caused serious public debate with his controversial views on the existence of an "extra chromosome" in the Russian people.
However, the Russian side refused to change its decision, despite the objections of the US and Western countries. According to sources close to the Kremlin, Medinsky, who is one of Vladimir Putin's personal confidants, is the most suitable candidate to defend Moscow's interests in the negotiations.
According to analysts, this decision is likely to provoke new tensions in relations between the two countries. Despite the protests of Western countries, especially the United States, which are mediating the talks between Kiev and Moscow, Russia's refusal to back down from its position could further complicate the international political situation.
The world community is now focused on the upcoming talks in Istanbul. It is eagerly awaited what the outcome of this meeting will be and how it will affect the situation. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
