The harvest in Tajikistan has increased, but why are prices not falling?
Despite the significant increase in fruit and vegetable production in Tajikistan this year, the population is concerned about the significant increase in prices. In the first four months of 2025, the price of fruits and vegetables in the country increased by an average of 25 percent. This, in turn, is also negatively affecting the prices of products consumed in everyday life.

According to official statistics, the prices of daily food products, especially cabbage, carrots, potatoes and onions, are growing rapidly, affecting the purchasing power of the population. For example, this year the prices of potatoes and onions have increased several times compared to last year. In particular, the increase in prices in the markets is seriously worrying the population.

It is noteworthy that the data provided by official government agencies also show an increase in the scale of vegetable production. In January-April of this year, Tajik farmers produced a total of more than 146.2 thousand tons of vegetables, which is significantly higher than last year. In particular, the yield of potatoes and onions has also increased significantly compared to previous years.

At the same time, fruit prices are also increasing. For example, in the first 4 months of 2025, fruit prices increased by 11.4%. This increase is also causing an increase in the daily expenses of the population. However, the volume of fruit production also increased by 16.3% this year, and the total yield exceeded 1,122 tons.

According to experts, this situation reflects general trends in the price-value market. It can be said that the price of products depends more on the volume of production than on transportation, production and other factors in market processes.

The rise in prices for fruits and vegetables is also having an impact on the prices of other important food products. For example, the prices of fatty foods, meat, and even soft drinks have increased by at least 1 percent.

However, there are exceptions to this pattern. Products that are in high demand among the population, such as flour, chicken, rice, and sugar, on the contrary, are notable for their falling prices. Although this decrease is a mitigating factor for the population, the general increase in prices continues to put pressure on the living standards of the population.

This situation raises many questions: why do prices not decrease when the harvest is increasing? The issue of state control and ensuring market transparency remains one of the most pressing issues today.

In general, representatives of the Tajik government and experts emphasize the need to develop a comprehensive set of measures to address these problems, control the market, and ensure price stability. How the situation develops in the coming months could have a greater impact on the daily lives of the population. Therefore, stabilizing prices in the markets will remain one of the most important issues for the people of Tajikistan in the coming months.
