Two major railway accidents in the Bryansk and Kursk regions of the Russian Federation have shocked the country. In a short period of time, railway bridges were blown up in the two regions and trains derailed. According to official sources, more than 70 people were killed and dozens were injured in the accidents.

Tragedy in Bryansk: train explodes near bridge

On June 1, a passenger train traveling from Klimov to Moscow crashed in the Bryansk region. According to the governor of the region, Alexander Bogomaz, the train was traveling with 388 passengers when the bridge on the main road was blown up and collapsed onto the railway. As a result, the train derailed.

Initially, it was reported that 7 people died in the accident, but later it was officially announced that this number exceeded 70. The number of victims has reached 69, including 3 children.

Mourning in Bryansk - cultural events suspended

In connection with the tragedy, mourning days were declared in the Bryansk region from June 2 to June 4. State flags were lowered in the region, entertainment programs were suspended in all cultural institutions and television and radio channels.

Bridge explodes in Kursk - train burns

The cloud of tragic events was not limited to Bryansk. Also, on the night of June 1, it was reported that a railway bridge collapsed in the Zheleznogorsk district of the Kursk region. At that time, a freight train was moving on the bridge.

As a result of the incident, the train's diesel locomotive caught fire, and emergency services quickly brought the fire under control. Three of the cars derailed and part of the train fell onto the road under the bridge.

Acting Governor of the Kursk region Alexander Khinshtein said that the train driver and two of his assistants were among the victims. All of them were hospitalized with moderate injuries.

Explosions confirmed as the cause

Svetlana Petrenko, an official representative of the Investigative Committee of Russia, confirmed that both bridges collapsed as a result of explosions. According to her, on May 31 at 22:50, the upper part of the Vygonichi-Pilshino railway line in the Bryansk region was blown up. On June 1, the railway bridge on the Ostapovo-Mikhailovsky Rudnik section in the Kursk region exploded.
