The peace talks between the delegations of Ukraine and Russia, which took place in Istanbul, Turkey on June 2, 2024, resulted in a number of agreements of great importance. At this meeting, representatives of the two countries made historic decisions on the exchange of prisoners of war and the bodies of fallen soldiers.
As the head of the Ukrainian delegation, the country's Minister of Defense Rustem Umerov, stated at a press conference, the sides agreed on the exchange of seriously ill and seriously wounded prisoners of war, as well as prisoners aged 18 to 25. Such a decision is extremely important for both sides from a humanitarian point of view and is of great importance in terms of human rights.
In addition, another important aspect of the agreement was the exchange of the bodies of soldiers killed on the battlefield. This process will be carried out in a "6000 for 6000" format. According to the head of the Russian delegation, Vladimir Medinsky, there are 6,000 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers and officers on Russian territory, all of whom will be identified through DNA analysis and handed over to Ukraine. Medinsky stressed that this move is being made from a humanitarian point of view.
At the same time, during the meeting, the two sides agreed on a temporary ceasefire in some parts of the front for two to three days. This short break is considered important for both sides to collect the bodies of the dead and improve their relations.
According to Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, the Russian side has submitted a memorandum to Kiev on the conditions for ending the war. The Ukrainian side has received a week to comprehensively study this memorandum and determine its further actions. During this period, Ukrainian experts will carefully analyze the content of the document and determine the next stage.
Speaking after the meeting, Ukrainian President's Office Chief Andriy Yermak said that the Russian side had been provided with a list of hundreds of Ukrainian children. The number of children on this list is 339. Ukraine is making firm demands for the return of these children from Russia.
The head of the Russian delegation, Vladimir Medinsky, said that the Russian side had not forcibly taken any children and that if their legal representatives were found, they would certainly be returned. At the same time, he criticized the Ukrainian side's attempts to turn this issue into a show on the international stage.
An agreement was also reached on the next meeting of the two sides. According to the Ukrainian Defense Minister, the next meeting was proposed to be held from June 20 to June 30. Umerov considers this meeting to be extremely important for the success of future negotiations.
The second round of talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul lasted more than an hour and was held behind closed doors. The results of this meeting were an important step towards easing tensions in relations between the two countries, strengthening humanitarian principles and restoring mutual trust.
