US President Donald Trump did not rule out that Washington could put serious pressure on both sides if efforts to resolve the Ukraine-Russia conflict fail. He made the remarks in the Oval Office during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Trump's words were quoted by Fox News.
"If it is true that the war is not going to end, we will take drastic measures. This, frankly, could affect both sides - Russia and Ukraine," the American leader said.
Trump: Toughness is a possible option
Noting that there is still hope for achieving peace through negotiations, the US president said:
"My idea is that there is a certain time frame for a peace agreement. If this process does not work out, regardless of which side is responsible, the United States will stand firm on its principles."
Trump also emphasized that the US is once again playing a central role in resolving this conflict.
Meers: Germany will continue to put pressure on Russia
German Chancellor Friedrich Meers also expressed his point of view during the talks. He stressed that Germany is firmly in support of Ukraine and is therefore seeking to put strong pressure on Russia.
“We believe that this conflict can only be resolved through dialogue. Therefore, we need to continue consultations and cooperation in this regard,” Meers said.
Conversation with Putin and alarming signals
A few days before this meeting, on June 4, Trump had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During the conversation, the parties discussed the operation “Spider Web” launched by Ukraine against Russian military airfields.
During the conversation, Putin said that the chances of achieving peace in Ukraine in the near future are very low and stressed that the attack on military areas in Moscow would be met with a full response.
Trump is on a diplomatic footing
So far, Axios has reported that Trump is concerned about the operations carried out by the Ukrainian military on Russian territory and Moscow's retaliatory strikes. The reason is that such military actions could complicate peace talks.
Donald Trump considers the Ukrainian problem to be the most important issue in world politics. However, he does not rule out the possibility of using not only diplomatic dialogue in the current process, but also pressure and sanctions if necessary.
Although there is hope for a negotiated solution to stop the war, the balance of power is changing sharply. America wants to maintain its influence in this process. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
