Several European Union countries are demanding stricter measures to protect minors from social media. According to Deutsche Welle, the governments of France, Greece, Denmark, Slovenia and Cyprus have proposed banning or severely restricting access to TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and other popular platforms for children under 15.
The issue was discussed at a meeting of digital ministers of the European Union member states in Luxembourg. France took the lead in this regard and proposed imposing an obligation on platforms to require official parental consent from minors to register on social media.
It turns out that many children across Europe are now using TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter, which are intended for 13-year-olds, as well as YouTube and Tumblr, which are restricted to 16-year-olds.
French Minister of Digitalization and Telecommunications Clara Chappaz said that European children start using social networks on average at the age of 7-8. This exposes them to various digital threats, such as cyberbullying, hateful content, and even pornography.
According to experts, prolonged dependence on mobile devices and social networks in children can lead to mood disorders, depression, social isolation, and a decrease in the ability to think critically.
Therefore, although a law in this direction has already been adopted in France, it has not yet been approved at the European Union level. The EU Commission is developing its own solution to this issue - it intends to create a special application that will determine the age of users on social networks. This program will ensure that the networks do not serve people who are under the required age.
According to the initiators of the ban, social platforms should feel responsible not only for adults, but also for children. This issue is widely discussed in European society.
