Among this year’s awardees, English football legend and former Manchester United and England national team star David Beckham received special recognition. The 50-year-old Beckham was awarded this highest honor not only for his achievements in football but also for his charitable work in society. Beckham himself said he never even dreamed of such an honor.

Also among the honorees is Hollywood star and Oscar-winning actor Gary Oldman. The star of such famous films as “Darkest Hour”, “Sid and Nancy”, “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” was awarded a knighthood for his immense contribution to the arts. His role in the “Harry Potter” series has also undoubtedly expanded his fan base.

Another recipient is living legend of British music, founder and lead singer of the rock band The Who, Roger Daltrey. He was recognized not only for his artistic work but also for his long-term support of a foundation fighting teenage cancer.

The list of honors published by the UK government this year includes over 1,200 public figures, representatives of art and science, social activists, and others. Among them are the 77-year-old famous singer and actress Elaine Paige, writer Pat Barker, and former defense minister Penny Mordaunt.

This year’s oldest honoree is 106-year-old William Irwin, founder of a winemakers’ club, who received the Medal of the Order of the British Empire for his service to society. The youngest awardee is 11-year-old Carmela Chillery-Watson, who suffers from congenital muscular dystrophy and was recognized for raising public awareness of disability issues.

For reference, the Order of the British Empire was established in 1917 by King George V and has five levels. Only recipients of the top two levels are entitled to use the title “Sir” for men or “Dame” for women.

This tradition has always had an important place in British history and continues to honor those who make a worthy contribution to science, sports, the arts, and public life.
