The European Union has sharply opposed the possibility of the Russian Federation mediating in the increasingly tense conflict between Israel and Iran. According to AFP, which cited the words of European Commission representative Anwar al-Anouni on June 16, Moscow does not have the capacity to be an "objective mediator" in this situation, because in recent months Russia has strengthened its strategic ties with Iran, including signing a military cooperation and comprehensive partnership agreement in January.
The European Commission representative also cited Russia's ongoing aggressive war against Ukraine as an example. In his opinion, Moscow constantly violates international law and the UN Charter, and therefore its image as a "neutral and reliable mediator" is equal to zero. Brussels is expressing strong criticism and doubt on this issue.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump stated that he was open to discussing the possible mediation of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Iran-Israel conflict. "He is ready. He called me about it. We talked for a long time about this," Trump said in an interview with ABC News. These statements have caused serious debate on the international stage.
Recall that on the night of June 13, Israel launched one of the largest military operations in its history and delivered powerful missile strikes on several strategic targets in Iran, including important facilities in Tehran and nuclear centers. As a result of these strikes, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hossein Salami, the chief of the General Staff of the country's armed forces Mohammad Bagheri, several high-ranking generals, and leading nuclear scientists were killed. According to Iranian media, more than 220 people died as a result of these attacks.
Currently, the situation in the Middle East remains tense. International experts and observers fear a further deepening of the conflict and the emergence of new geopolitical problems. The European Union and other Western countries emphasize the need for truly neutral and reliable mediators to restore peace. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
