Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, in a statement following the G7 summit, once again drew the world’s attention to Russia. The latest decisions affect not only the political and financial elite around the Kremlin but also some individuals who have long remained under protection.
The strictest sanctions in recent years
According to Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, this is one of the most significant and large-scale sanction packages since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The statement notes that, at this stage, more than 70 individuals and over 200 “shadow fleet” ships have been sanctioned. This is considered a major blow to Russia’s strategic channels, which sought alternative routes for oil transportation.
In the spotlight — Putin’s ex-wife
One of the most striking names in the new sanctions list is Russian President Vladimir Putin’s former wife Lyudmila Ocheretnaya and her husband Artur Ocheretny. Although this couple has not been in the public eye in recent years, their financial connections and links to the Russian elite have made them targets of sanctions.
Famous people on the blacklist
The list also includes:
- famous conductor Valery Gergiev;
- the president’s nephew Mikhail Shelomov;
- Boris Yeltsin’s daughter Tatyana Yumasheva and her husband Valentin Yumashev;
- former head of Rosnano Anatoly Chubais;
- major IT figure Natalia Kaspersky;
- former Austrian foreign minister Karin Kneissl;
- former “Nord Stream - 2” director Matthias Warnig;
- the face of Russian rhythmic gymnastics Irina Viner.
These people are regarded not only as economic resources, but also as part of Russia’s external influence channels.
“Shadow fleet” and oil prices
Another important area affected by the sanctions is the so-called “shadow fleet” of over 200 ships. These ships were often used to transport and export Russian oil at prices above the set limits.
Through these measures, Canada aims not only to hit the Russian economy, but also to eliminate schemes to bypass sanctions.
In summary, these sanctions announced by Canada serve as a serious signal to the Russian elite. Now, not only political figures, but also representatives of culture, business, and sports will have to feel the consequences on the international stage. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
