In China, another high-profile court verdict was announced in a major corruption case. Dai Daojin, who served as deputy chairman of the Hunan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, was sentenced to death for illegally receiving a large bribe. This was reported by China Daily.
Court verdict and details
According to the verdict handed down by the Zhuhai City Court on June 24, Dai Daojin received a bribe of more than $15 million. The court sentenced him to death, but the execution of the sentence was suspended for two years. He was also deprived of political rights for life and all his personal property was confiscated.
Confiscation of property and income
The verdict states that the illegal income he received — a total of 107 million yuan (approximately $14.9 million) — is fully confiscated in favor of the state. If it is determined that the accused does not have sufficient property, the remaining amount will be recovered from him in accordance with the law.
How did Dai Daojin receive bribes?
According to the investigation, while holding various positions, he abused his official powers. The accused received large material benefits either directly or through relatives. These actions were carried out over many years and were only recently exposed.
Xi Jinping and a tough anti-corruption approach
Chinese President Xi Jinping has repeatedly stated that the fight against corruption is one of the country’s top priorities. According to him, the party and the state will in no way turn a blind eye to bribery.
In China, a death sentence with a two-year reprieve is a type of punishment that can sometimes be commuted to life imprisonment. However, this decision is made based on the subsequent behavior of the accused. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
