A new era in heart surgery has begun: for the first time in the United States, a heart transplant was performed using a robot without opening the human chest. The historic operation, which took place at Baylor St. Luke’s Clinic in Houston, is being noted as a major event not only in American, but also in the world of cardiology.
For a 45-year-old seriously ill patient, this opportunity was the last hope. He had been connected to a medical device since November 2024, and traditional methods could not help. However, a team of highly qualified doctors expressed confidence in modern robotic technology.
Usually, a heart transplant involves a complete opening of the chest, which is a very difficult operation. However, this time everything was completely different: a robot surgeon removed the heart from the abdominal cavity through small incisions and helped to install a new organ. The surgeon was given the opportunity to precisely control all movements using a 3D camera, joysticks and pedals.
This was done in March 2025, and a month later the patient fully recovered, was discharged from the hospital and returned to active physical activity. According to the lead surgeon, Kenneth Liao, who supervised the operation, this robotic method has a number of advantages over operations performed with a traditional incision:
– The integrity of the chest is preserved;
– The risk of infection is reduced;
– The recovery process is accelerated.
This operation was performed for the first time in US history and began a completely new stage in world medicine. Also, in 2024, a similar robotic transplant was recorded in Saudi Arabia. Today, robots are proving to work with precision and efficiency not only in large industrial sectors, but also in the most delicate processes for human life.
Such technological advances in cardiac surgery create safer, more painless and faster recovery options for patients, giving new strength to hopes.
