Russia intensifies fight against Ukrainian drones in the air

Against the backdrop of ongoing sharp clashes with Ukraine, Russia has further activated its air defense system. On June 27 and 28, a total of 31 aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicles — drones launched from Ukraine — were shot down in various regions of the country, Anadolu agency reported, citing a statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense.

In which regions were drones destroyed?

According to the ministry, most drones were destroyed in the southern and central regions:
- In the Republic of Crimea – 9,
- In Bryansk region – 6,
- In Smolensk region – 5,
- Over the Black Sea – 5,
- Over the Azov Sea – 2,
- In Oryol, Belgorod, Kaluga, and Krasnodar regions — one drone in each.

These results show the high activity and promptness of the Russian air defense system. According to military experts, such large-scale shoot-down operations confirm that the air defense operates as a single system.

The existing threat is confirmed by new records

Recall that on the night of May 18, 2025, 273 drones were launched from Ukraine into Russia — this was the largest drone attack ever recorded. During that attack, only 88 drones were destroyed, and the rest reached different areas. Interestingly, 128 drones turned out to be “imitators” — that is, artificial devices that served as decoys.

Previously, the largest drone attack occurred on the night of February 23, 2025. At that time, 267 drones were sent towards Russia.
