Who benefits from discrediting Telegram?
Discussions around the Telegram messenger have heated up once again. This time it's not just news — it’s about deliberate attempts to damage its reputation. The app’s founder, Pavel Durov, issued a direct and firm statement on the matter.

In his view, recent media reports are no coincidence, but rather actions serving a specific agenda. This refers to news that appeared on Thursday, July 17, claiming Telegram was preparing to open an office in Russia.

According to an article on the Hi-Tech Mail portal, the Roskomnadzor website shows that Telegram Messenger Inc. is “in the confirmation stage” of possibly creating a branch, representative office, or registering as a legal entity in Russia.

However, Pavel Durov is skeptical of these reports. In his personal Telegram channel, he described the situation as a continuation of previously observed pressure and media campaigns. He stated that targeted efforts to discredit Telegram are underway, which cannot be explained by “innocent journalist errors” alone.

Durov said:
“Perhaps we are witnessing not harmless journalist mistakes, but the work of those conducting a targeted campaign to discredit Telegram.”

So far, Telegram has not made any official statements about opening an office or registering legally in Russia. This lack of clarity raises further questions.

In any case, Durov’s latest statement makes his position clear. Telegram is not just a piece of technology — it remains a symbol of freedom and independence, and the battle around it seems to be just beginning.
