A mass shooting at a high-rise office building in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, has left four people dead. Among the victims was NYPD officer Didarul Islam. The attacker, 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura, took his own life after the attack.
The shooting began Monday evening at the building located at 345 Park Avenue. According to police, Tamura entered the building with an MR rifle, opened fire in the lobby, then took the elevator up, shot another person dead, and killed himself.
Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Tamura first shot Officer Islam in a building that houses the NFL and Blackstone. Surveillance cameras captured him entering with a weapon. On the 33rd floor, where Ruden Building Management is located, he opened fire again.
Tamura had traveled from Las Vegas, and his connection to the city or building remains unclear. He was a registered gun owner in Nevada; ammunition was found in his car.
Didarul Islam, originally from Bangladesh, had two children, and his wife is pregnant with their third. He had served in the NYPD for three years. Commissioner Tisch called him “a true hero.”
The incident caused panic in Manhattan, people sheltered in place, and police took hours to clear the building.
