Telegram founder Pavel Durov was questioned for nearly 10 hours in a Paris courthouse, according to international media reports.
Sources say this marks the third time Durov has been summoned for questioning since summer 2024. The French prosecutor’s office suspects that Telegram is being used to facilitate criminal activity such as drug trafficking, arms deals, and human trafficking.
Investigators are pressing Durov for clarity on how the platform is managed and how user data is handled. They are particularly concerned about Telegram’s encrypted features, which they believe are being exploited by organized crime networks.
Durov maintains that Telegram is committed to protecting user privacy and that the company does not have the technical means to monitor private conversations or hand over data to authorities, due to its end-to-end encryption and decentralized architecture.
This incident has sparked global debate over digital privacy and government oversight. Many view France’s actions as increasing pressure on tech companies to open up access.
So far, no official charges have been filed against Durov, but the investigation is ongoing. New developments are expected in the coming weeks.
