New Ukraine negotiations expected at Trump–Putin meeting

U.S. President Donald Trump has informed his close allies that he intends to discuss the possibility of halting military operations in Ukraine during a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was reported by Bloomberg, citing its sources.

According to the sources, during his conversation on August 6 with leaders of European countries and Ukraine, Trump expressed a “confident and hopeful tone” regarding this issue. According to him, if the parties are ready to discuss “possibilities of territorial exchange,” then Russian President Vladimir Putin may be open to starting peace negotiations. However, the sources did not clarify which specific territories or conditions were being referred to.

Bloomberg writes that the presidents of Russia and the U.S. intend to meet personally in the near future. This agreement was reached on August 6 during a meeting in Moscow between Trump’s special representative Steven Witkoff and Vladimir Putin.

It is also reported that Trump, after meeting with Putin, is discussing a plan to organize trilateral negotiations involving the Ukrainian leadership. On August 7, Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov stated that the Kremlin has not yet commented on this proposal.

Through this, the dialogue between the U.S. and Russia is expected to rise to a higher level. However, it should be noted that Moscow is currently demanding full control over the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions of Ukraine, which it annexed in 2022.

However, the actual situation is different. Although more than three years have passed since the war began, the Russian army has not yet succeeded in fully capturing these regions. In addition, Russia is currently controlling only small parts of the Sumy and Kharkiv regions.

The development of these events is drawing significant attention not only on the international political stage but also among the global public. The upcoming conversation between Putin and Trump may prove decisive not only for the two countries, but also for Ukraine’s fate and regional stability. Will a step toward peace be taken — the answer to this question will become clear in the coming weeks.
