The Australian government has announced plans to recognise the Palestinian state in September at the UN General Assembly. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the decision follows similar moves by the United Kingdom, France, and Canada.
According to Albanese, the initiative is based on commitments received from the Palestinian Authority as well as prospects for a two-state solution. “A two-state solution is humanity’s best hope to break the cycle of violence in the Middle East and to bring an end to the conflict, suffering, and starvation in Gaza,” he said.
Israeli officials, however, said that such recognition “rewards terrorism.” According to Gaza’s health authority, five more people have died in recent days from hunger and malnutrition, bringing the total number of deaths since the start of the war to 217. It is also reported that more than 61,000 people have been killed as a result of military operations since 2023.
The Palestinian Authority stated that recognition of statehood demonstrates growing international support for the people’s right to self-determination.
The Australian prime minister noted that over the past two weeks he has held talks with leaders from the United Kingdom, France, New Zealand, and Japan. Experts believe this step could increase international pressure on the Middle East peace process.
