As reported by the Telegram channel “Pul pervogo,” considered close to the press service of the President of Belarus, the leaders of the USA and Belarus — Donald Trump and Alexander Lukashenko — held a phone conversation. It was noted that the talk took place ahead of the negotiations of Trump and the President of Russia Vladimir Putin in Alaska scheduled for the evening of August 15 — that is, in contextual terms this call is connected with meticulous preparation before the summit, like a fire inspection.
Trump described the impression of the conversation briefly but precisely: he said the process went “very well.” According to him, the central purpose of the phone conversation was clear:
“The purpose was to express gratitude to him for the release of 16 prisoners. In addition, we are discussing the issue of releasing another 1300 prisoners. We discussed the issue of meeting with the leader of Belarus in the future,” said Trump. In this way, the topic at the same time points to gratitude, possible paths of release, and a potential face-to-face meeting on the agenda.
By his addition, Washington and Minsk also exchanged views regarding the upcoming summit in Anchorage dedicated to resolving the Ukraine crisis. That is, it is seen that before the meeting in Alaska there was an attempt to gather the exchange of positions and multifaceted diplomatic issues into one panel.
Zamin.uz impression: there are three parallel directions in the content of the call — a practical humanitarian step (gratitude for 16 prisoners and the possibility of releasing another 1300 prisoners), political-diplomatic logistics (coordination before the Anchorage summit), and the future format (consideration about a meeting of the leaders). Now the question in the center of attention — into what practical results will the Alaska dialogue be able to turn these directions?
