Maricic breathed like a seal and broke a record

This extraordinary achievement places Maricic alongside ordinary seals, as they can renew 90% of the air in their lungs in a single breath, while in humans this figure is only 20%, writes Peopletalk.

The freediver used pure oxygen to cleanse his blood from excess nitrogen. He breathed oxygen for 10 minutes and then held his breath. As a result, the oxygen level in his blood increased fivefold compared to normal.

Normally, the lungs of a healthy adult can hold about 450 ml of usable oxygen, since oxygen makes up only about 21% of the air we breathe. However, when breathing pure oxygen, the lungs can absorb up to three liters of oxygen with each breath, flushing nitrogen from the blood.

For most people, the safe apnea time when breathing pure oxygen is only eight minutes. This is less than one-third of the time Maricic was able to stay without breathing.
