Aid ships bound for Gaza return due to bad weather

A convoy of humanitarian ships that departed from Barcelona towards Gaza was forced to turn back due to a strong storm. Organizers said on Monday that among the dozens of boats and ships that set sail on Sunday was climate activist Greta Thunberg.

“We conducted a trial sail and returned to port to wait for the storm to pass. This was done to prevent complications for the smaller boats,” the statement said. According to their information, wind speeds reached up to 56 kilometers per hour.

The organizers have not yet announced when the journey will continue. The group of ships aimed to break Israel’s sea barrier and deliver food and humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

Since 2007, Israel has enforced a sea barrier on Gaza. Officials say the measure is necessary to prevent weapons from reaching Hamas militants.
