Landslide destroys entire village in Sudan
Heavy rains in the Marra Mountains of Sudan’s Darfur region triggered a landslide. According to the UN, at least 370 people have died, but the death toll could be higher. Local residents claim that up to 1,000 people may have been killed.

The landslide destroyed much of the village of Tarseen. Rescuers have so far only managed to recover nine bodies. Hundreds of families lived in the village, and many people remain missing.

The UN is sending rescuers, food, water, and other aid. However, reaching the mountainous area is very difficult: rain and poor roads are slowing down rescue operations. Aid delivery by air is being planned.

The governor of Darfur called the event a “great tragedy” and urged the international community to provide immediate assistance.
