A major accident involving a passenger tram occurred in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. On Wednesday evening, one of the trams sped downhill and crashed into a building at a bend. According to official reports, at least 16 people were killed and more than 20 passengers were injured.

Witnesses said the tram suddenly went out of control and moved downhill without stopping. A sound similar to an explosion was heard, and black smoke rose. “People were screaming, many rushed to help. It was very frightening,” said a tourist who witnessed the incident.

Passengers in the lower carriage were also in great danger. Local residents and eyewitnesses joined rescue efforts until the arrival of emergency services.

Police and fire brigades arrived at the scene to assist the injured. The government declared a national day of mourning in memory of the victims. Experts have begun investigating the causes of the crash.
