After the change of government in Syria, demand for asylum in Europe decreased

The number of applications related to refugee status in the European Union has sharply decreased. The reason is cited as the change of government in Syria and the emergence of hopes for stability in the country.

According to data from the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA), in the first half of 2025 the number of asylum applications submitted to the European Union, Switzerland and Norway decreased by 23 percent compared to last year.

Of these, nearly 25 thousand were submitted by Syrians, which is 66 percent less compared to the same period last year.

The EUAA report emphasizes that it is difficult to link the change in refugee flows to measures in migration policy. The main factor indicated is the change of government in Syria in December 2024.

“Since Syria’s new leadership advocates stability and recovery, many citizens have gained hope of returning to their homeland,” the agency’s report states.
