Thailand’s Supreme Court has ruled that former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra must serve one year in prison. The court found that his transfer to a hospital in 2023 due to health reasons was unlawful.
Thaksin was previously sentenced to eight years, but the king later reduced it to one year. He spent less than a day in prison before being moved to a hospital due to heart problems.
The court ruled that Thaksin’s illness was not severe and that he could have been treated outside prison. Therefore, he must serve the remainder of his sentence in jail.
Thaksin has been an important figure in Thai politics since 2001. His family remains active in politics, and his daughter Paetongtarn said she would continue the party’s work as an opposition.
