UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the country’s flag must not become a symbol of violence and division. According to him, the flag represents Britain’s diversity and no one should feel unsafe on the streets because of their origin or skin colour.
This statement came after large demonstrations in central London. During the march organised by Tommy Robinson, around 150,000 people took part. Clashes with police left 26 officers injured and 24 people arrested.
Starmer stressed that the right to peaceful protest remains, but attacks on police and pressure on citizens will not be tolerated. He reminded that Britain is built on the values of tolerance and respect.
During the demonstrations, thousands of people carried flags. Police deployed more than a thousand officers to maintain order and brought in additional forces. An investigation into the incidents is ongoing.
