US President Donald Trump has recently begun to seriously question the possibility of persuading Russian leader Vladimir Putin to stop the bloody conflict in Ukraine. This was reported by a number of influential Western publications.
Previously, he had repeatedly publicly promised to end the war in a short time. However, it is now said that Trump has been forced to admit that he cannot persuade Putin to compromise through negotiations. As reported by Axios, the White House leader openly told his advisors that he misjudged the Kremlin leader's intention regarding peace talks.
Trump has repeatedly stated that harsh measures could be taken against Russia if the fighting in Ukraine continues. Recently, in a speech on Truth Social, he announced Washington's readiness to impose new and devastating sanctions against Moscow. However, he noted that NATO countries must also take decisive steps to stop purchasing Russian oil.
According to him:
- This is not Trump's war (if I were president, such a war would not have started!), but Biden and Zelenskyy's war. I am only trying to stop it and save the lives of thousands of Russians and Ukrainians. (7,118 people died in one week. This is an unbelievable tragedy!) If NATO does as I said, the war will end soon. Otherwise, both my time and American resources will be wasted.
On September 14, in a conversation with journalists, he also drew attention to the position of Europe. Trump criticized that Europe is still buying oil from Russia and noted that they should tighten sanctions in sync with Washington.
During the presidential election, Trump promised to end the war within 24 hours. To this end, he spoke with Putin several times by phone. Later, on August 15, a face-to-face meeting was held in Alaska. After almost 3 hours of negotiations, no practical results were observed. Even a temporary ceasefire agreement has not been reached in Ukraine.
Trump himself expressed a positive opinion after the meeting and said on Fox News that he would rate the dialogue with Putin on a 10-point scale as the highest. However, many analysts interpret the Alaska summit as a defeat for the White House and a political victory for the Kremlin.
Trump's recent statements, such as "Putin has gone mad!" and "There's no hope left for him," mean they can't influence the Russian leader.
Thus, after Trump's initial confident promises, the possibility of reaching an agreement with the Kremlin is becoming increasingly weak.
