Tokyo police detained 21-year-old security inspector Ryu Matsumoto, who worked at Haneda Airport. He is suspected of stealing cash while checking passengers' baggage.
Matsumoto told investigators that the work was difficult, he even thought about resigning and wanted to get excited about the theft. He also admitted that he intended to spend the money on living expenses.
According to reports, he had been working for the security company since April and was responsible for passenger control under a contract with Japan Airlines. Police suspect he has stolen a total of 1.5 million yen ($10,000) from 70-80 passengers since August.
The last incident occurred on Saturday evening. When a passenger distracted attention, it was discovered that Matsumoto secretly took 90,000 yen and hid it in a paper wrapper in the toilet. When the passenger realized there was no money, surveillance camera footage exposed the suspect.
