Farmers in Zambia have sued two Chinese-linked companies. They say the collapse of a dam released toxic waste into water, killing fish and destroying crops. The water has become unsafe to drink.
The incident happened in February and affected around 300,000 households. The US embassy issued a warning about contaminated water and soil in the area.
Farmers who filed the lawsuit are demanding $80 billion in compensation and $20 million in emergency aid from the companies.
The companies have not commented on the incident. The government said the situation does not pose a serious health risk.
