Trump signs order restoring death penalty in Washington

US President Donald Trump signed an order to restore the death penalty in Washington, D.C. This measure had been abolished by the city council in 1981.

According to the White House statement, “Trump signed a presidential memorandum instructing the US Attorney General and the District of Columbia Prosecutor to fully enforce federal death penalty laws to prevent and punish the most serious crimes.”

Criminals accused of murder may now face execution. The main reason for restoring the death penalty is the high level of crime in the city. Trump has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the persistent danger level in the US capital.

The White House emphasized, “The soft policies pursued in recent years in the District of Columbia have led to an increase in crime and put residents, visitors, and federal agencies at risk. Washington has become one of the most dangerous cities in the country.”

US Attorney General Pam Bondi has already announced efforts to expand the death penalty nationwide. “We are doing this not only in Washington, but across the entire US,” CNN reported.
