Sentence date set in Slovakia for assassination attempt on prime minister

The verdict for 72-year-old writer Juraj Cintula, accused of attempting to assassinate Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, is expected to be announced on October 21, Pravda reported.

According to the report, on Wednesday, the Specialized Criminal Court in the city of Banská Bystrica heard the final testimonies in the case. During the session, the prime minister’s representative, lawyer David Lindtner, emphasized that the attack was politically motivated. Fico himself did not attend the hearing and stated that he is not following the process.

Cintula’s lawyer, in his defense speech, objected to the prosecution’s arguments. According to him, it is incorrect to classify the incident as a terrorist act, since the defendant did not intend to kill the victim but only to injure him.

The lawyer also stressed that his client had no intention of organizing a coup d’état and asked the court to issue a fair verdict considering the defendant’s advanced age.

It should be recalled that the assassination attempt took place on May 15, 2024.
