In a park in the Dutch city of Almere, unknown individuals set fire to 10 beehives belonging to beekeeper Harold Stringer. As a result of the fire, about half a million bees died.
According to Stringer, each hive contained an average of 40–60 thousand bees. He described the incident as “horrible and painful.” Police said the fire was deliberate and that a flammable substance had been used.
The incident occurred in the Betrixpark area of Almere. Police are investigating and looking for witnesses. Local residents were asked to provide any information about the fire.
Experts say the number of bees in the Netherlands is declining. Nevertheless, Stringer said he plans to create new hives and continue his work.
